Nursery gardening is today one of the main business in
Grottammare, and one of the most important farming
district in Italy.
The
Mediterranean flora in particular is a feather in our
cap: white and pink Oleander, Piceno Bay with its deep
green, the silver green Olive, Butterbush, fruit trees
like the Orange and some species of Palm like the
Phoenix Canariensis.
The
Phoenix Canariensis, a magnificent and luxuriant
palm named after the Canary Islands, has been introduced
in Grottammare during the last century giving the city a
contribute to its embellishment and nowadays is the
tangible expression of our mild climate.
The tradition of nursery gardening has developed at the
beginning of twentieth-century thanks to a favourable
climatic conditions, the good conformation of a
wind-sheltered and excellently sunny ground, and the
fertility of the field.
During past years a lot of new companies were born and
the production developed and consolidated: fruit trees,
ornamental plants and Mediterranean flora have been
added to nursery gardening production. Nowadays all the
different plants produced in Grottammare are sold to
home and overseas markets. |
